Academy Picks 72 New Members
1 May 2001 7:00 pm
The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) announced today that it has elected 72 scientists and engineers to join its exclusive ranks, bringing the total number of active members to 1874. In addition, the academy posthumously elected Leonard Mandel, a professor emeritus of physics and optics at the University of Rochester. (Mandel died on 9 February 2001, 6 days after an NAS class membership committee had put his name on the ballot.)
