The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy today released a new, cross-agency, progress-reporting format to help federally funded scientists file updates on their research. OSTP Director John Holdren promises that the standardized form will allow scientists "to spend less time managing paperwork and forms, and more time producing research results."
The Senate version of legislation that would cut greenhouse gas emissions 17% below 2005 levels by 2020 will be released on Monday, said its sponsors, senators John Kerry, (D-MA), Lindsey Graham, (R-SC), and Joe Lieberman, (ID-CT). The bill would cover electrical utilities at first but phase in manufacturers later.
A federal investigation into animal research labs at the University of Utah has flagged several infractions, but concludes that overall the labs are "in good order." The findings largely run counter to a complaint filed last year with the U.S. Department of Agriculture by the animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), which conducted an 8-month undercover investigation that claimed to find "miserable conditions ... and terrible suffering."
