Western researchers and North Korean colleagues teamed up last month on an extraordinary expedition to install seismometers and collect geological samples at Mount Paektu, a volcano on the North Korea-China border. About 1000 years ago, the volcano unleashed one of the biggest eruptions in recent history, the Millennium Eruption. Studies aim to unravel the mystery of why the volcano was capable of such a titanic blast and gauge the hazards of a future Millennium-scale eruption.
