French Mathematician Tapped to Head Funding Agency

French mathematician Jean-Pierre Bourguignon will become the new president of the European Research Council (ERC). Bourguignon will take the helm at a young agency whose budget will balloon from just over €7 billion in its first 7 years to €13 billion for the period 2014 to 2020. His main challenges, European science policy followers say, will be to jealously guard ERC's independence and resist pressure from countries in southern and eastern Europe that want a bigger slice of ERC's pie.
