Conventional wisdom holds that few U.S. college students ever transfer into a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) field because they lack the necessary academic preparation. Given uniquely high attrition rates, the result is a dearth of tech-savvy workers. But two new studies raise questions about the accuracy of both those assumptions and suggest that the flow into STEM fields is more of a two-way street than a leaky pipeline.
