Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, the European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, had promised a name change for the massive, multiyear science and technology funding effort commonly known as the Framework Programme. Framework 7 ends in 2013, and earlier this year she launched a contest  for the next 6-year cycle, which ends in 2020, that drew more than 1000 entries. The short-list is now out :
The incorporation of "2020" into each name is a reference to the objectives of the new Europe 2020 strategy , according to Geoghegan-Quinn. The public has until 17 June to vote for its favorite, or least-disliked, name. And fans of the former name can take some solace in the fine print noting: "Whichever name is chosen will be followed in the extended version of the title by the words: "Framework Programme for Research and Innovation."
