Methane, its main component, burns more cleanly than coal or gasoline, but when it leaks into the atmosphere packs a punch as a greenhouse gas as much as 30 times more potent than carbon dioxide. A study released earlier this month  concluded that official estimates of methane leaks by the Environmental Protection Agency may be as much as 75% too low.
