From the White House pool report of traveling reporters who shadow the president:

A little scenery: there were about 900 people in the room, the vast
majority of them male and white. The president mentioned the importance
of encouraging women and minorities, who he said are "underrepresented"
in the field but "no less capable." All of the White House team members
present appeared to be awake during the remarks. 

The assembly gave the president several hearty rounds of applause, the
most sustained of which was for this one:

"The days of science taking a back seat to ideology are over," he said.
