Modelers at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, have dramatized what researchers have been pointing out for weeks: Some of the oil being spilled into the Gulf of Mexico will inevitably enter the Gulf's Loop Current and sweep around Florida to enter the Gulf Stream. Those currents are so swift—covering 60 to 160 kilometers per day—that oil could enter the far North Atlantic this summer.
