Jeffrey Mervis

Jeff reports on and coordinates coverage of science policy in the United States and around the world. A former newspaper editor, he's been a science writer since 1981. Jeff managed the news section of Nature before joining Science in 1993.

Jeff tries to keep a close eye on the changing fortunes of science across the federal government, including the executive agencies, the White House, and Congress. He's one of the few reporters who regularly covers the National Science Foundation, the major source of nonmedical academic research across the natural sciences and engineering. He also follows efforts to improve science and math education at all levels, as well as the forces that shape the U.S. and global scientific workforce.

Jeff has reported from five continents, including Antarctica, and interviewed leading scientific figures for national television and radio shows. He also speaks about the politics of U.S. science to both scientific and lay audiences.
