Viruses are notorious for their role in disease, but only about 1% are actually pathogenic. What are all those other viruses doing? Marilyn Roossinck of Pennsylvania State University, University Park, spoke with Sarah Crespi about the diversity of roles that viruses take on in ecological systems, from protecting plants from drought to moderating nitrogen fixation.
