BOSTON—Every year, humans use a trillion plastic grocery bags globally—but they make up only 2% of all synthetic polymers manufactured annually. How can we bring down the quantity of fossil fuels used in producing these materials, and how can we reduce the plastic waste we leave in the environment? Carolyn Gramling and Kerry Klein caught up with chemist Stephen Miller, who presented his research about renewable plastics here at the annual meeting of AAAS (which publishes ScienceNOW).
