Brookhaven's Bond Takes Helm

The revolving leadership door at troubled Brookhaven National Laboratory has stopped swinging, at least temporarily, with the appointment today of physicist Peter Bond as interim director.

A 25-year veteran of the lab in Upton, New York, Bond replaces Lyle Schwartz, who on 1 May was named to fill the gap left by the departure of Nicholas Samios after 15 years as director. Schwartz is president of Associated Universities Inc. (AUI), which was fired as the lab's contractor in the aftermath of a tritium leak at its High-Flux Beam Reactor (see ScienceNOW, 13 June). The Department of Energy is holding a competition for a new contractor, and the winner is expected to install a new management team. Bond's appointment comes after AUI's previous choice, David Moncton of Argonne National Lab in Illinois, turned down the offer last week.
