A worm capable of bursting forth from the body of a host, eerily resembling the behavior of the extraterrestrial creature in Alien, has been found for the first time in cats. Dracunculus insignis—a parasite that infects hosts via dirty drinking water—has been discovered in two felines, according to a report in this month’s issue of the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery. The parasite, which can grow up to a foot long and is typically found in raccoons, can form a bulge in the cat’s limb and slowly break free from beneath the skin. Veterinarians recommend keeping cats indoors to keep them from drinking unsafe water.
