From scoring gold in the Olympics to becoming the next U.S. presidential candidate, Barbie has done it all. Unfortunately, girls who play with the quintessential doll don’t set their own goals so high, according to a study published this month in Sex Roles. Researchers had young girls play with either Barbie or a Mrs. Potato Head doll and afterward showed them images of multiple occupations, asking whether they themselves or boys could do the profession in the future. Girls who played with Barbie saw themselves in fewer occupations, while those who played with Mrs. Potato Head stated they were capable of nearly as many careers as boys.
