A survey analyzing Americans’ grasp of tech terms like SEO, gigabyte, and software has revealed some startling results. One in 10 U.S. adults believes the language for creating websites, HTML, is a sexually transmitted disease, while 23% think MP3—a digital audio format—is a Star Wars robot. The high-definition Blu-Ray Disc was labeled as a marine animal by 18% of survey takers, each of whom was presented with terms and asked to choose from three possible definitions. According to the Los Angeles Times, the study questioned more than 2300 adults and was conducted by vouchercloud.net, a coupon website that wanted to know how much tech jargon the public knows.
