The Pentagon is shifting its attention to the sea. The Department of Defense is proposing dramatic increases in spending to create seaborne drones and underwater pods to store drone submarines. At the same time, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency plans to intensify its research on a submerged “truck” that can transport and deploy unmanned submarine vehicles. The efforts to improve underwater technology are in hopes of countering China’s rising influence and threats over various nations’ sea lanes, routes vessels regularly use for transport. According to the RT network, some of the unmanned drones will be made to collect information about the oceans’ currents, temperature, and salt content to improve the accuracy of studies on climate change and weather forecasting.
