What would you do if there were an impending zombie apocalypse? Stockpile food and weapons and barricade your home, of course. But chemistry could also be key to your survival. Playing off the rumor that zombies are attracted to the scent of fresh, living humans and not the stench of a rotting corpse, a chemist has concocted the idea of death cologne, according to the American Chemical Society. The cologne would imitate the smell of a rotting corpse by combining the chemicals responsible for the putrid smell we give off when we die: putrescine and cadaverine. Add a bit of methanethiol to the concoction for zombies to get a whiff of a rotten egg, and they’re sure to stumble past anyone wearing it.
