You may want to consider leaving your contacts in cleaning solution for a bit longer. Scientists have found that a bacterium that can cause eye inflammation and loss of vision—Pseudomonas aeruginosa—survives for up to 4 hours in the standard lens cleaning solution. Although a majority of bacteria strains are killed within 10 minutes of being immersed in the solution, P. aeruginosa’s resistance suggests that the disinfectant fluid should be improved. The research was presented today at the Society for General Microbiology’s Annual Conference in Liverpool, U.K.
