Plasmodium vivax parasite

The second worst malaria parasite that infects more than 100 million people annually didn’t originate in Asia after all. Scientists who tested the feces of more than 5000 apes in Africa found Plasmodium vivax-like parasites in gorillas and chimpanzees. According to a study published today in Nature Communications, they then tested the evolutionary relationship between the ape and human parasite, discovering that P. vivax originated in Africa and evolved from a single ancestor.
